When

Life is so hard when you are a baby. You want to eat, but you want to sleep. It's enough to make you cry. And then there all these contraptions they put you in. Sigh.

Thursday's bili test was borderline, and thus bought us one more day under the lights (since they, understandably, didn't want to see us back for a re-admit). Friday middle of the night test showed a clear improvement, and the one they drew 12 hours after the lights went off was even better. There was also a carseat challenge test, which underscored just how tiny this baby is (though I do realize that he was likely the biggest patient in NICU at the time).

And now we are home. Things still are a little hectic, and I still need a lot little sleep. But we are home. We are home.

He is so tiny! But so gorgeous. And not nearly as visibly jaundiced. I am so happy. "We are home" - what wonderful words.

Rest and snuggle the little one as much as possible.

welcome home! Gives resonance to 'shabbat shalom,' doesn't it?

Assuming the shalom part can happen on tired, grumpy-glorious terms, with the shabbat bit accepting that it's going to have to sneak in around the edges of feeings and diaperings and curious Monkeys.

Still. Not too shabby.

Hey there...just stumbled on your blog via glow in the woods, and wanted to pass along my Congrats. It sounds like you had a few scares when he was first born, so it must feel so so good to be home. All the best.

Congratulations! I know you are filled with indescribable joy. Joy that you never thought you could feel again. I am so happy for you.

We lost our full term son two days after birth from an infection...I have often thought of "doing" a blog. I think you're so smart and so brave to do so. You've inspired me, and maybe I'll start one too.

Your title reminds me of a quote by CS Lewis that our grief counselor gave us. She said, Love makes us vulnerable and as CS Lewis understood:

Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket--safe, dark, motionless, airless--it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.

Here's to broken hearts and finding joy again, as I did with our second son and as I am sure you have with your son.
